monsters

For Emmaleigh
Little girls are taught to be afraid of strangers
Sometimes, they jump into their beds
From as far away as they can
Because of the monsters who lurk underneath
If we call him a "monster"
We can pretend this will never happen again
If we call for a public hanging
Then we can sleep at night
If we make jokes about rape in prison
Then we can pretend we have Justice
If we pretend he wasn't human
Then we can close our eyes

Sometimes I see a hand reaching out from under a bed
And I understand why monsters only come out at night
